Making homemade slime is a fun and sensory rich craft that lets children explore texture, movement, and creativity. Slime is soft, squishy, and stretchable, which makes it a favorite activity in classrooms and homes. According to the American Chemical Society, simple hands on science experiments help children better understand materials and reactions in everyday objects. This slime recipe uses safe ingredients that are suitable for children ages 12 and under. Adult supervision is recommended for measuring ingredients.

Slime helps children strengthen hand muscles and supports tactile development. Kids enjoy kneading, stretching, squeezing, and forming shapes. Slime play also encourages scientific thinking because children can observe how ingredients change during mixing. This project helps build confidence and creativity because kids can choose the colors and experiment with different textures.

Materials Needed

School glue

1 teaspoon baking soda

Food coloring

1 tablespoon contact lens solution

Mixing bowl and spoon

Step 1: Add Glue

Pour the glue into the mixing bowl. If children want to make more slime, they can start with a larger amount. According to PBS Parents, giving children choices and opportunities to experiment supports problem solving and planning.

Step 2: Add Baking Soda

Add the baking soda to the glue and mix. The mixture will begin to thicken. Children can stir the ingredients and observe the texture changing.

Step 3: Add Color

Add food coloring to the mixture. Kids can choose bright colors, pastels, or even mix colors together. Adding color makes the slime more visually appealing and encourages creativity.

Step 4: Add Contact Solution

Add the contact solution and stir until slime begins to form. Adult help may be needed during this step. The slime will start pulling away from the sides of the bowl. Knead the slime with your hands for a smoother texture.

Step 5: Play and Store

Once the slime is formed, it is ready to play with. Stretch it, squeeze it, and shape it. Store the slime in a sealed container when finished to keep it from drying out. Slime can be reused many times and is fun for sensory play.
