SBCSS Celebrates Educators For Going Above and Beyond

San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS) proudly recognized nine recipients who were named 2025 San Bernardino Countywide Classified School Employees of the Year. This year’s honorees were recognized during a May 27 event at the Dorothy Inghram Learning Center.

 

"The 2025 recipients exemplify the heart of servant leadership, dedicating themselves each day to uplifting their colleagues and school communities," said County Superintendent Ted Alejandre. "It’s an honor to recognize the profound impact of their work, which is transforming lives through education."

 

The 2025 San Bernardino Countywide Classified School Employees of the Year are listed by category below:

 

  • Clerical and Administrative Services – Lori Thomas has served as an Administrative Assistant at La Contenta Middle School in Morongo Unified School District for 22 years, playing a vital role in the school’s daily operations. Her responsibilities range from substitute coordination and budget management to planning major events like promotion ceremonies and registration, all carried out with exceptional organization and efficiency.

 

  • Custodial and Maintenance Services – Rudy Ontiveros has served as a dedicated Custodian at Vineyard Junior High School in Alta Loma School District for five years. Known for spotting issues before they arise, Rudy is the go-to person for everything from special events to staff training. What sets Rudy apart is his commitment beyond his role. After school, he becomes “Coach Rudy,” mentoring student athletes and teaching life lessons through sports. His impact is felt by students, parents and staff alike.

 

  • Food and Nutrition Services – Yolanda Chavez has been a beloved pillar of the Ontario-Montclair School District serving as a Noon Duty Aide and Food Service Assistant with heartfelt dedication. Her passion for cooking brings warmth and nourishment to every student she serves. Whether preparing meals, or supporting children in need, Yolanda does it all with pride and compassion. A natural leader, she mentors coworkers and builds lasting connections with students, many of whom return to thank her.

 

  • Health and Student Services – Amber Abney has been an invaluable part of Apple Valley Unified School District (AVUSD), serving as a Licensed Vocational Nurse since 2009. She provides exceptional care, handles emergencies and creates health plans with compassion and precision. Beyond her clinical role, Amber supports student wellness through active involvement in Parent/Teacher Committees, AVUSD’s Family Centers, and volunteer work with the Granite Hills High School football booster club.

 

  • Paraprofessional Services – Lisa Soliz has served as a Library/Media Technician at Twentynine Palms High School in Morongo Unified School District for over a decade. She has curated resources and fostered a love of reading through innovative programs, creative displays and rewards like a popular book vending machine, which makes the library a sought-after space for students. Her influence extends beyond the library. She has been the statistician for girls’ basketball for eighteen seasons and chaperoned many school events.

 

  • Security Services – George Plick has been a steadfast protector and inspiring mentor at Alta Loma High School in the Chaffey Joint Union High School District. As lead Campus Security Officer for over 30 years, his careful attention to safety, from securing gates to overseeing evening events, has created an environment where learning thrives. His impact goes beyond security. As a coach and mentor for over 15 years in track and field and girls’ basketball, he has shaped not only skilled athletes but resilient young adults.

 

  • Skilled Trades Services – Hugo Trevizo has served as the sole locksmith for all 15 school sites in Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District for the past nine years. His precision, reliability and dedication to safety make him an essential part of district operations. Known for his professionalism and positive attitude, Hugo handles every task with pride. His commitment to service, both at work and in the community, reflects his generosity, resilience and dedication to excellence.

 

  • Technology Services – Dana Beller has been a Student Information Technician at Apple Valley Unified School District for over eight years. Her work reduced errors and boosted district efficiency. She leads Quality Assurance meetings and develops comprehensive training programs—work so impactful it was featured at the 2024 California IT in Education conference. Dana’s impact extends beyond district boundaries, helping to create better opportunities for students throughout the region.

 

  • Transportation Services – Shari Nelson has been the steadfast heart of Apple Valley Unified School District’s transportation department, ensuring thousands of students arrive safely each day. A master multitasker, she excels as a dispatcher, router, and driver, handling each role with professionalism, warmth and tireless dedication. Shari’s leadership shines through in every challenge, from last-minute route changes to mentoring new drivers, consistently elevating her team.
