Before technology, libraries were the main hub for reliable information and breeding curiosity. People of all ages flocked to the library to study, read, relax, imagine, and discover the unknown! That same love of discovery is being passed to the next generation, through the San Bernardino County Library’s annual Bookmark Contest, open now through February 27th, blending art, literacy, and the ongoing importance of supporting local libraries.

The contest is open to students in Kindergarten through 12th grade, encouraging participants to design an original bookmark inspired by reading, books, libraries, or their own imagination. It’s a fun and meaningful way for young artists to celebrate literacy, while showcasing their artistic talents!

Entries will be judged in four age groups:

  • Kindergarten – Grade 2

  • Grades 3 – 5

  • Grades 6 – 8

  • Grades 9 – 12

Artists must be San Bernardino County residents, and each participant may submit one original design. Designs may not include copyrighted characters, and all submitted artwork becomes the property of the San Bernardino County Library.

Once the contest is over, each local library branch will select a winner from each grade category. From there, grand prize winners—one from each San Bernardino County supervisorial district—will be chosen by the Board of Supervisors in the spring. The grand prize-winning designs will be professionally produced as bookmarks and distributed across all San Bernardino County libraries, giving students the exciting opportunity to see their artwork enjoyed by readers throughout the county.

The Bookmark Contest not only highlights student creativity but also reinforces the joy of reading and the important role libraries play in the community. Furthurmore, it emphaizes how libraries nurture creativity, encourage reading, and provide safe, inclusive spaces for youth and families. By supporting libraries, communities invest in early literacy, academic success, digital access, and cultural enrichment—resources that strengthen neighborhoods and open doors for future generations.
