Redlands is one of California's best places for young families to live, according to a study conducted by NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy website. Redlands ranks in the top 10 at number 7 for consistently ranking high in five criteria studied by NerdWallet in data from several cities and towns throughout the state: its public school ratings, median home value, cost of homeownership, median income and economic growth. Redlands was ranked seven out of 10 by nonprofit GreatSchools for its public school system; shows a median home value of $340,600 and a median monthly income of $68,015. The city's resident's experienced a 41.2 percent increase in income growth between 1999 and 2011. “Situated in the Inland Empire, Redlands offers affordable housing, growing salaries and good schools,” said NerdWallet analyst Jaime Ortiz. “The city offers many family-friendly activities, including Market Night each Friday in downtown, the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival and weekly farmer’s markets each Sunday.” Redlands is home to Esri, a large tech company which creates GIS mapping systems and software, and to multiple medical centers, including Redlands Community Hospital. The community also has a rich history with ties to the California citrus industry - many homes of citrus tycoons are on display in Redlands today. “Redlands has a rich blend of cultural, historical, commercial and community resources surrounded by a unique natural setting," Mayor Pete Aguilar told NerdWallet. Redlands ranks amongst four other Inland Empire cities ranked on the list of 20: Murrieta at No. 4, Indio at No. 17, Chino Hills at No. 19 and Upland at No. 20.
