Local Sierra Club member Brian Elliott will speak at the Oct. 1 San Gorgonio Chapter, Sierra Club meeting. His program is entitled “Adventure in Lake Clark National Park, Alaska” and the meeting will be held at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands at 7:30 p.m. Lake Clark National Park is located in southwest Alaska across Cook Inlet from Anchorage. The park is noted for its two big volcanoes, Iliamna and Redoubt, as well as coastal brown bears. It has much more than that to offer the adventurous traveler. Brian and three of his friends spent 21 days canoeing two of the park’s National Wild and Scenic Rivers, the Tlikakila and Chilikadrotna Rivers. They also visited Twin Lakes, which are perhaps best known for being the wilderness home of Dick Proenneke, who homesteaded there in the late ’60s and continued to live in his self-made cabin until the 1990s. Brian and his friends visited the cabin and hiked in the area around the lakes before canoeing the length of the two lakes to begin their trip down the Chilikadrotna River. The group saw brown and black bears, lynx, coyote, moose, nesting bald and golden eagles and many other species of birds along the way. All are welcome to attend the meeting. Parking and admission are free. The San Bernardino County Museum is located at 2024 Orange Tree Lane, Redlands.
