Officers, firefighters and personnel from the Redlands Police, Fire and Quality of Life departments and Emergency Operations Manager responded to a number of minor issues during a brief downpour Sunday, Aug. 3. Heavy rain fell for about 45 minutes beginning at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday. The city’s Emergency Operations Center was activated at a Level 1 (the lowest level) for two hours, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Reported issues included: -Water covering several intersections throughout the city. -Four manhole covers that were forced open by the force of water in the storm drains. Two vehicles were damaged when they drove over the open manholes. Manhole covers were replaced within a short time of being reported. -16 rain related Fire Department calls, three of them to assist outside agencies. -10 water extractions by the Fire Department related to water entering private residences. -“Dozens” of non-stop rain related calls to Police Dispatch over a 90-minute period. -A 40-foot private tree fell on San Timoteo Canyon Road. Quality of Life crews removed the tree within -30-minutes and San Timoteo Canyon Road remains open. -Water filled the Zanja channel to the top edge but remained contained within the channel. -Power was reported out in the unincorporated Donut Hole, including Citrus Plaza. City crews put traffic lights in the area on flash and placed 4-way stops at intersections. Residents are urged to drive with caution due to wet conditions and possible debris in the road.
