The first Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society (RHIS) floral design group workshop for the new year will be on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 10 a.m. in one of the smaller rooms at the RHIS' normal meeting location at the Church of the Nazarene. RHIS will have a guest presenter to share ideas on floral arrangements and designs for the winter season. Witch Hazel, Japanese Honeysuckle, miniature pinecones and colorful berries with ribbons will be used as well as Calla Lilies and (if available) flowering cherry branches. Daffodils will be included to suggest “spring is almost here.” RHIS will also use non-floral designs using succulents and leaves in keeping with the season and to give your arrangements long life. Containters will be provided for guests, but they may also bring their own container and a knife or floral shears (an ID tag is recommended). The RHIS will also be holding a hands-on demonstration on how to prune roses on Jan. 17 at Sylvan Park in Redlands. We will meet at 9 a.m. at the Elsie Grant Krimm Memorial Rose Garden which is located on the west side of University Ave., about one hundred yards south of Colton Ave. In addition to pruning, participants will learn how to plant bare root roses as well. The RHIS is donating about forty new roses to the restoration of the rose garden, and we will be planting those roses at the end of the pruning demonstration. Bring long handled clippers, gloves and a shovel if you have them. Call John Grimm at 909-798-7335 for information on the January Floral Design workshop and George Nash 909-792-7328 for information rose pruning.
