Women's Soccer: Cal Baptist Draws Even 0-0 with Sonoma State

California Baptist University had two opponents to battle Thursday, Sept. 10 afternoon in Sonoma State and the heat. Despite the hot temperatures, neither team could find the back of the net, resulting in a 0-0 draw. The tie moves the Lancers to 0-2-1, while the Seawolves stand 1-1-1. "I'm happy with the effort," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "The team showed a great deal of heart and grit. We were solid defensively, limiting them to shots from long range, and Sara Escobedo did fantastic in goal." The action didn't really heat up for CBU until the extra periods hit. In the 97th minute, the Lancers drew a foul about 25 yards out. Chaylin Couzens stepped up to the free kick and just hit it over the frame. Justene Kesterson gave CBU another close call in the second overtime period. The SSU goalkeeper just got her glove on it, but coughed up a rebound allowing Desarae Felix to get another crack at it. "We were a little unlucky on offense tonight, but we were able to create some dynamic chances," said St. Clair. Still, the Lancers couldn't manage to sneak in the golden goal, ending the game with the 0-0 draw. CBU has a quick turnaround, hosting UC San Diego on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lancers will look to get their first win of the season, but face another California Collegiate Athletic Association team. "It's certainly challenging to play back-to-back games, but we put this tough schedule together to get better," said St. Clair. "We want to play at the highest level and compete for a PacWest title. UCSD is a really good team. It'll be a good challenge for us.”
