From grandparents to parents, to young adults and babies joyriding in their strollers as their mothers and fathers pushed them along the 5K trail, the Redlands community came together to participate in the third annual Beautiful Run 5K Race. Held on Sept. 21 at Prospect Park, the Beautiful Run 5K race was an event presented to build recognition and awareness, as well as raise sponsorship, to support the Beautiful Gate, a family and childcare center dedicated to helping families and children in need in Lesotho, Africa. The Beautiful Gate also provides children with loving parents, medical needs, food, clothing and shelter. Katie Verhoel, a runner and annual participant in the race, shared, “I truly love running in a space like this because the trail is just beautiful and today’s climate is perfect, but most importantly I have enjoyed today’s run because it was really for a great cause.” As Kristin Ergersma stood along the sideline waiting for her son, Troy Ergersma, to finish the race, she shared, “We are supporting this organization along with our church, willingly to help continue to raise money for the children in Lesotho, Africa. Something held like this for our community to participate in is really great.” Racing to the finish line, community participants, church members from The River Christian Reformed Church, and Crosspoint Church were welcomed by the surrounding crowds waiting at the finish line and cheering them on. Middle school teacher Roger Boersen of Redlands Christian School offers a challenge every annual Beautiful Run 5K race. He explained, “Every race I have participated in, I challenge every former, present, or future student of mine by saying whoever gets across the finish line before I do, I will make additional donations for every person that beats me.” He added, “The more, the merrier! I love to throw out this challenge because I don’t mind it at all. I know this will help support the children and families of the Beautiful Gate organization.” Ending with high-fives, cheers, hugs and smiles, the Beautiful Run 5K race helped raise donations and awareness for the families who are supported in the Beautiful Gate organization.

A residence shows visible damage from flooding, mud and debris following severe winter storms that began Dec. 23, which brought heavy rain and debris flows to mountain and high desert communities across San Bernardino County. This week, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved recovery-related fee waivers to help eligible property owners repair and rebuild as response and long-term recovery efforts continue.
