New York Times bestselling author Luis Carlos Montalván and his service dog, Tuesday, will visit Crafton Hills College on Wednesday, April 1, from 5-7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, for an author talk and book signing. Luis Carlos Montalván is a 17-year veteran of the U.S. Army, including multiple combat tours in Iraq. After returning home, experiencing pain from physical, emotional, and psychological wounds he sustained in combat, he met Tuesday, his beloved service dog, who transformed his life. Not without his own trauma, Tuesday found it hard to connect to another human being, until he met Luis. Until Tuesday is the story of how the two found salvation in each other and have become advocates for service members, veterans and their families as well as all people with disabilities. Their inspirational memoir, Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him debuted on the New York Times bestseller list in 2011 and returned to the list again in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, it won two USA Best Book Awards and received finalist honors for an Audio Publishers Association (APA) “Audie Award” and an International Latino Book Award. Amazon.com has declared Luis & Tuesday’s first children’s book, Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond between a Soldier and his Service Dog (Macmillan, May 2014), the “Best Nonfiction Children’s Book of 2014” and the Children’s Book Council (CBC) and the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) has selected it a “2015 Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People.” Sponsored by the CHC Professional Development Committee in commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the American Disabilities Act (ADA), Montalván and Tuesday will share their efforts and mission of advocacy across North America and beyond. Copies of Until Tuesday and Tuesday Tucks Me In will be available for purchase and signing. Crafton Hills College is located at 11711 Sand Canyon Road in Yucaipa. Parking will be free for this special event.
