Redlands Symphony Returns to Live Performances

Internationally celebrated guitarist, Rene Izquierdo, will perform Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez in his debut performance with the Redlands Symphony when the orchestra returns to live performances on Saturday, October 9, 2021 in Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Redlands.  Doors open at 6:30 PM.  The concert begins at 8 PM.  Maestro Ransom Wilson will conduct.

The full program will include Fanfare for the Common Man by COPLAND, Magic Flute Overture by MOZART, and Symphony No. 5 by BEETHOVEN. The concert is sponsored by a generous gift from Marilyn Solter.

All concert goers – including musicians and symphony staff --  will be required to be fully vaccinated and wear face coverings at the concert.  Vaccination status and identifications will be checked at the door. The Symphony’s complete health and safety guidelines are available at redlandssymphony.com/experience.

Izquierdo, who Maestro Wilson describes as one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, was born in Cuba and says he was 9 years old when he first got interested in classical guitar: “My father took me to a concert by Greek Guitarist Costas Cotsiolis and I was hooked.  I first learned to play folk songs and “Nueva Trova” songs.  Little by little, I became curious about music and wanted to improve my skills. Guitar was always a hobby for me until I came to the United States.”

With over seventy engagements per year, whether as a solo performer, chamber musician, or as a guest soloist with orchestras, he has performed to critical acclaim touring extensively throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Izquierdo is frequently invited by renowned festivals and institutions, having played at stages such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Manaus Opera House in Brazil, and National Recital Hall in Taiwan.

About his performance with the Redlands Symphony, Izquierdo says, “Aranquez always feels like the first time for me.  It is one of the concertos that even though you know what is coming it still surprises you.”

Full season subscriptions for Redlands Symphony’s 21-22 season start at $98.  Pick-Four subscriptions begin at $69 and single tickets start at $18.  Full details are available on the symphony website at www.redlandssymphony.com or by calling the box office at (909) 587-5565.  Subscriptions and tickets are now available for sale online.
