Furnishing Alcohol to Underage Volunteer

Two people were cited after selling alcohol to a teenage Redlands Police Department volunteer Tuesday.

Police visited 38 licensed alcohol establishments in the City on Tuesday, June 26, conducting a Minor Decoy Operation, which uses underage teens under the direct supervision of a peace officer to enter a licensed establishment and attempt to buy alcohol. During decoy operations, minor decoys are required to answer truthfully if asked their age and to provide valid identification on request indicating they are underage to buy alcohol.

One decoy visited 25 locations that sell alcoholic beverages for consumption off the premises. Two clerks sold beer to the decoy after checking his valid ID, which showed him to be underage to buy alcohol. A 43-year-old clerk at 7-Eleven, 1161 W. Lugonia Ave., and the 65-year-old co-owner of K.B. Korner Liquor, 402 W. Redlands Blvd., were each cited.

Another decoy visited 13 locations that sold alcohol for consumption on site. None of those locations sold alcohol to her.

Both businesses were also served with violation paperwork from the state Bureau of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

The Redlands Police Department also wants to recognize the 36 businesses that were visited but refused to sell alcohol to the underage volunteers. Those businesses are Cal 10 Shell, 951 California St.; Food 4 Less, 2070 W. Redlands Blvd.; Circle K, 27300 W. Lugonia Ave.; M & C Liquor; 1560 Orange St.; Circle K, 1598 Orange St.; 7-Eleven, 1256 Orange St.; Quick Pick Food Store, 1125 Orange St.; U – Save, 10 W. Colton Ave.; N & H Liquor, 115 E.  Minor Decoy operations are a component of the Redlands Police Department’s Responsible Redlands initiative. The Redlands Police Department, with the support of state agencies, including the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and Office of Traffic Safety, the County of San Bernardino, and local businesses and community groups, launched the initiative in late August 2013 to focus on enforcing alcohol laws.

The Responsible Redlands initiative aims to curb the problems related to binge and underage drinking in Redlands in order to achieve a safer, healthier community. The campaign includes DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols to identify intoxicated drivers, party patrols to enforce the City’s Social Host Ordinance, decoy and shoulder tap operations to cite businesses and individuals who provide alcohol to underage persons and educational efforts for local businesses that serve alcohol. Responsible Redlands welcomes partnerships with alcohol retailers and establishments that serve alcohol.
