Last summer, a rambunctious, roly-poly little bulldog won our hearts when she was introduced as the University’s mascot-in-training, poised to become the first female bulldog mascot at Redlands in its more than 100-year history.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, that little bulldog assumed her title and was crowned at a coronation ceremony fit for a Queen.
Adelaide, named after the founding first lady of the University, Adelaide Field, is known to most as Addie. She learned the tricks of the mascot trade from the University’s recently departed and beloved former mascot Thurber. Then, with fortitude, discipline and the care and encouragement of her handler, Mary Littlejohn ’03, ‘12, Addie completed months of training and attended hundreds of University events and activities.
University of Redlands Provost Kathy Ogren applauds Addie and looks forward to her future endeavors on behalf of the University. “I’m so proud that we have the Queen of the Bulldogs at Redlands.”
Already nationally recognized in her historic role, Addie aspires to be a role model to mascots and to support the efforts of animal rescues and shelters. Her daily agenda will include working with students and staff, visits to athletic events and public appearances as her schedule allows.
