On March 15, 2014, the University of Redlands held its first annual Health Fair at E Neal Roberts Elementary School in San Bernardino. This fair gave families the chance to learn more about taking care of themselves, while also getting actual health check-ups. For kids, there were activities to entertain them, such as face-painting and balloon animals, as well as games. In addition, raffle prizes were available in the form of gift cards and certificates, as well as small appliances. Organization for the fair began six months ago, according to the three coordinators Cindy Cheung, Jason Pia, and Carlos Casillas, who are second year students at the University. The planning included a health committee formed of first and second year students. According to Casillas, the goal of this first fair was to “establish a good connection with the community.” Although it was held outside, classrooms were borrowed to provide a limited health services. Some of these services included blood tests for diabetes screening and eye examinations, where they not only checked vision, but also examine the muscles around the eye. In addition, they also offered lessons in cross-fit exercises and advice on exercise methods to better promote a healthy lifestyle. Undergraduates from the University also taught classes in both English and Spanish languages. As this was only their first fair, 120 people participated. However, the hope is that this event will continue and bring in more people, allowing students to reach more people and promote healthy living for families.
