University of Redlands to Host Wellness Symposium

The University of Redlands Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, in partnership with Loma Linda School of Behavioral Health and Christian Counseling Service, will present the Second Annual Wellness Symposium—Trauma, Healing and Recovery, on Oct. 14 at the Orton Center on the University of Redlands campus. The event which will commence at 8:30 a.m., is open to counselors, psychologists, pastoral counselors, chaplains, students, researchers, and the general public. A wide range of presentations will include the following topics: • Second-hand shock: Surviving, thriving, preventing burnout with individuals who have been traumatized • Post-traumatic responses in children experiencing natural disaster • The trauma resiliency model • Resiliency, Spirituality, and Trauma: A review of current research with clinical applications • Neuroplasticity and trauma • Interpersonal violence and trauma recovery • School-based trauma recovery • Treating Veterans with PTSD The keynote speaker scheduled is Dr. Sonya Norman, associate professor of psychiatry at University of California, San Diego. Norman, who holds a doctorate in counseling psychology from Stanford University, previously directed a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment clinic for veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Norman’s primary areas of research are in psychotherapies that treat PTSD and commonly co-occurring problems, such as substance use disorders and post-traumatic guilt and in treating PTSD in recently deployed veterans.
