Four-year letterman (1995-98) Cheyane Caldwell for the UCLA Bruins will be one of the featured guest speakers at the Stand Firm Men’s Conference at the Packinghouse in Redlands. The conference will be held Feb. 6 and 7 and the theme is Endurance. Caldwell played fullback and linebacker for the Bruins under coaches Terry Donahue and Bob Toledo. He was a member of teams that won or shared two conference championships and earned a school record of 20 consecutive wins. He also played in three bowl games: the 1995 Aloha Bowl, the 1998 Cotton Bowl and the 1999 Rose Bowl. Caldwell earned his bachelors in Sociology in 1999 and his masters in Education in 2000. In 2007, Caldwell survived a fall while battling a major emergency fire as a member of the Los Angeles Fire Department. He had crashed through the roof of a building and landed in the middle of the inferno. He was saved when the captain of his unit sprayed water through the opening in which Caldwell had fallen. Today, Caldwell is a captain with the Los Angeles Fire Department, serving in its In-Service Training section. He and his wife Nohemi, also a UCLA graduate, who now works as an emergency room physician, have an infant son, Cheyane Joaquin. Caldwell’s story was featured in Billy Graham’s TV special, ‘Heaven’, nationally airing this November. “We look forward to seeing the men in this valley come together to be encouraged to press on as warriors in our daily battle. Life is a race of endurance”, said event coordinator Greg Opean. Other speakers include Pastor David Rosales (Calvary Chapel Chino Valley), Pastor Ben Courson (Applegate Christian Fellowship) and Ben Gaona (Missionary). The conference will also feature an interview with former Baja 1,000 champion Rick Webb. Worship and music will be led by Jimmy Robeson, a worship leader from Escondido. The two-day conference does not require any registration and starts at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6. Saturday, Feb. 7 will be from 9 a.m. until noon. For more information call the Packinghouse at 909 793 8744 or visit www.thepackinghouse.org.

A residence shows visible damage from flooding, mud and debris following severe winter storms that began Dec. 23, which brought heavy rain and debris flows to mountain and high desert communities across San Bernardino County. This week, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved recovery-related fee waivers to help eligible property owners repair and rebuild as response and long-term recovery efforts continue.

Photo Caption: Crime in San Bernardino has dropped by 30 percent or more throughout the city. One reason is that there are more officers on the streets. The Police Department’s goal is to have 350 sworn officers. Current full-time staffing is reported at 295 sworn officers and 156 professional staff.
