As summer begins to wind down, California State University, San Bernardino is preparing to welcome thousands of returning and first-time students for another academic year. While many residents think of the university primarily as a place of higher education, CSUSB has become one of the Inland Empire's largest economic engines, generating jobs, research opportunities, cultural events, and workforce development that extend far beyond its campus.

University staff spend the summer months preparing classrooms, residence halls, technology systems, and student support services before the start of the fall semester. Orientation programs help incoming students become familiar with campus life, academic expectations, financial aid resources, and student organizations. These preparations are designed to help students transition successfully into college while improving retention and graduation rates.

Since opening in 1965, California State University, San Bernardino has grown from a small regional campus into a nationally recognized institution serving more than 18,000 students. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs while producing graduates who enter careers in education, healthcare, business, criminal justice, public administration, engineering, and numerous other professions. Many graduates remain in the Inland Empire, helping meet the growing demand for skilled professionals throughout San Bernardino County.

Beyond academics, CSUSB contributes significantly to the local economy. Thousands of faculty, staff, and students support nearby restaurants, retailers, apartment communities, and service businesses. University-sponsored conferences, athletic competitions, cultural performances, and public lectures bring additional visitors into San Bernardino each year. These activities generate millions of dollars in regional economic activity while reinforcing the university's role as one of the city's most valuable institutions.

The campus also continues expanding opportunities for community partnerships. Local school districts collaborate with university faculty on teacher preparation programs, while healthcare providers, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and private businesses regularly partner with CSUSB to provide internships, research opportunities, and workforce training. These partnerships help students gain real-world experience before graduation while strengthening the region's professional workforce.

Student success remains at the center of the university's mission. Academic advising, tutoring services, career counseling, mental health resources, veterans' services, and cultural centers all contribute to creating an environment where students from diverse backgrounds can thrive. Many incoming students are the first in their families to attend college, making these support programs especially important as they navigate higher education for the first time.

The university's commitment to innovation extends beyond the classroom. Research conducted by faculty and students addresses issues affecting the Inland Empire, including water resources, environmental sustainability, public health, economic development, education, and social equity. These projects frequently involve collaboration with community organizations and local governments, ensuring research benefits residents throughout the region.

As another academic year approaches, the excitement on campus extends well beyond the first day of classes. Every new student represents an investment in the future workforce, every graduate strengthens the local economy, and every partnership deepens the connection between the university and the community it serves.

For nearly six decades, California State University, San Bernardino has helped shape the future of the Inland Empire through education, research, and public service. As thousands of students once again fill classrooms, libraries, and campus walkways, they carry with them not only personal dreams but also the promise of contributing to a stronger, more innovative San Bernardino for generations to come.
