Redlands has earned high marks as one of the best places to live and, in a recent ranking, one of the best cities in the state to raise a family by the website Niche, which provides data and rankings on communities and schools throughout the United States. With a population of about 69,277 residents, the 36-square-mile town comes in at number 30 on Niche.com's list of 100 Best Towns to Raise a Family in California. Redlands was ranked high, with an overall grade of A-. Redlands received its number 30 ranking based on school ratings, crime rates, age demographics and access to affordable housing and childcare. "A high ranking indicates that a town attracts young families with good schools and a safe community," the site states. Redlands received an A grade for its public schools by the website, and data shows there's just about an equal amount of residents of all ages. The majority of its residents - 33 percent - have some college or an associates degree, while 21 percent have a bachelor's degree and 17 percent a master's degree or higher. The city's unemployment rate, according to data on Niche, is 5.4 percent, almost a full percent less than the national average of 6.3 percent. Redlands' poverty rate is 12.3 percent, less than the national average of 15.2 percent, according to Niche. Its median household income is $66,835, over the national average of $53,046. During the State of the City address in late May, the Redlands City Council gave an overview of Redlands' accomplishments and its path in the future. Several council members during their addresses to the public mentioned that Redlands was a "great place to live, work and play." Residents who were surveyed rated public service, schools, employment opportunities, home values, local government, business and overall quality of life high, according to data released by the website.
