The City of Redlands invites individuals to apply for a position on the A.K. Smiley Library Board of Trustees.

The Library Board of Trustees consists of five members, appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the City Council.  The trustees hold office for three-year terms. One member of the board is selected as President of the board.

The State Education Code mandates that, "the public library shall be managed by a board of library trustees." The Library Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m.

The Board may make and enforce all rules, regulations, and bylaws necessary for the administration, government, and protection of the library and all property belonging thereto. The Board may administer trusts created for the Library and receive gifts by devise or bequests, hold property in trust in California or elsewhere, and dispose of property for the benefit of the Library. Since 1922, the Trustees have managed an Endowment Fund, income from which supplements and enriches the Library's programs, acquisitions, and well-being.

By City Council resolution in 1932 affirming Robert Watchorn's Deed of Gift, the Library Trustees administer the Lincoln Memorial Shrine. In 2001, by City Council resolution, the Trustees also administer the Redlands Municipal Museum.

The deadline for filing an application for this position is Nov. 15.

Residents interested in applying for this position may request an application form from the City Manager's Office, Civic Center, 35 Cajon St., Suite 200,  Phone:  (909) 798-7510, or by downloading an application from the City’s website at https://www.cityofredlands.org/commissions-boards.
