“Homework Club" to return to Villasenor Library The San Bernardino Public Library and the Jack L. Hill Lifelong Learning Center have been providing after-school homework assistance for the past 8 years. The Homework Club is an outreach service that will be returning to our branch library at the Paul Villasenor library which is located in an underserved area of our city. In September we moved this service back to our Central Branch library (Norman Feldheym) which is located in the downtown area of San Bernardino. “This was a tough decision, but necessary, says the Library Literacy Coordinator, Paula Miller. It’s all about being short staffed and not enough money to run both places.” The Homework Club focuses on providing tutoring in Reading, Math, English and other subjects. Students range in grade level from K to 8th grade. Services will be returning on April 4, 2016 to the following locations and hours: Monday and Tuesday at the Paul Villasenor Library, 515 N. Mt. Vernon Ave., from 3 to 5:30 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday at the Norman Feldheym Library, 555 W. 6th Street, from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The client population served primarily consists of English Language learners (approximately 65 to 70%) whose first language is Spanish. Students from the surrounding schools walk to our library to receive help with their homework that most of their parents cannot provide. They also use other library services such as the computers and internet as well as reference services for theme paper research. Students that have consistently attended the Homework Club have shown improvement in their academic achievement. By providing further assistance with online tutoring on the library’s website at www.sbpl.org extends help that students throughout the San Bernardino community and beyond are able to further improve their educational levels. For further information on the Homework Club, please call (909) 381-8205 or (909) 383-5156.

Photo Caption: Crime in San Bernardino has dropped by 30 percent or more throughout the city. One reason is that there are more officers on the streets. The Police Department’s goal is to have 350 sworn officers. Current full-time staffing is reported at 295 sworn officers and 156 professional staff.
