A.K. Smiley Library Extending Hours Starting Oct. 5

Beginning Oct. 5, the Library will open at 10 a.m. on both Monday and Tuesday mornings, one hour earlier than the current opening time. “Thanks to increased funding from the Redlands City Council, the library was able to hire two additional part-time clerks,” noted library director Don McCue. “In addition to facilitating other service improvements, these positions will enable us to sufficiently staff the building for one additional morning hour on both Monday and Tuesday.” The library is starting to recover from the severe cuts to the library’s budget during the Great Recession. As a result, the Library Board made the difficult decision five years ago to drop from 66 hours to 54. “Judging by the number of patrons who are waiting outside our doors before 11 a.m. on those two days, I’m confident that this service restoration will be popular. Hopefully additional service hour restorations will be possible in the future.”
