A DUI/Drivers License checkpoint over the weekend, part of a nationwide campaign targeting drunken and drugged drivers, resulted in two arrests for driving under the influence and additional citations for other vehicle code violations. A total of 209 cars passed through the checkpoint in the southbound lanes of Tennessee Street at Park Avenue beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, through 3 a.m. Saturday. In addition to the two DUI arrests, police cited two unlicensed drivers and another driver for driving with a suspended license. Two drivers were cited for possessing open containers of alcohol in their vehicles. The Labor Day weekend checkpoint was part of an effort by the Redlands Police Department and law enforcement agencies nationwide to aggressively target drunken and drugged drivers, end impaired driving and save lives. The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign paired increased public awareness with high-visibility enforcement, to reduce the number of drunk drivers on Redlands streets. Funding for this special operation was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who reminds everyone; Report Drunk Drivers! – Call 9-1-1. The Office of Traffic Safety is offering a free mobile app – DDVIPCA.COM – aimed at thanking the sober designated driver with perks and free offers at area bars and restaurants.
