A butane lighter inadvertently left in a broiler caused a fire in an apartment oven Wednesday, Dec. 4. The fire was quickly contained and no one was injured.
Redlands firefighters responded to the report of a structure fire at about noon that day in the 0 block of North San Mateo Street. Redlands police evacuated the apartment before firefighters arrived.
The fire originated in the broiler section of the apartment’s oven, which had recently been repaired. A butane lighter, inadvertently left in the broiler, exploded as the oven was being preheated for baking. The fire was contained to the oven but there was smoke throughout the apartment.
There were no injuries reported. Damage is estimated at $1,500.
The Redlights Fire Department would like to remind residents that it is important to remember the broiler is exposed to heat every time the oven is used. Some people use their broilers to store assorted kitchen items which can result in fires. Never use the oven or broiler for storage and keep them clean.
