Five people were arrested, including three for driving under the influence, during a sobriety/drivers license checkpoint Friday, Jan. 30. Two others were arrested during targeted “saturation” patrols on Super Bowl Sunday. A total of 161 cars passed through the checkpoint in the eastbound lanes of Citrus Avenue at Church Street between 10 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday. In addition to three arrests for driving under the influence, two people were arrested on outstanding warrants. Two drivers were cited Jan. 30 for driving without licenses and two others for driving with suspended licenses, including one who attempted to back out of the tapering lane leading to the checkpoint. One driver failed to stop for the checkpoint. After a brief pursuit he was pulled over. After submitting to a field sobriety test he was found not to be under the influence and was released. RPD traffic officers also arrested two people during targeted DUI saturation patrols on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1. One driver was arrested for driving under the influence and another for outstanding warrants. Four people were also cited for traffic violations, including one citation for driving with a suspended license. Funding for sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols comes from a California Office of Traffic Safety grant and are a component of Redlands Police Department's Responsible Redlands initiative which focuses on enforcing alcohol laws.
