City Takes Delivery of Alternative-fuel Heavy-duty Vehicle

The City of Redlands recently took delivery of two new heavy-duty side loaders which run on liquid natural gas (LNG), paid for in part by funds from the Mobile Source Reduction Committee (MSRC) designated for the purchase of heavy-duty alternative-fuel vehicles. The new vehicles join a heavy-duty LNG front loader delivered last spring. The City’s Solid Waste Department took delivery of the first vehicle in April and the remaining vehicles in August. The City entered an agreement with the MSRC in February 2012. The program provides $30,000 per vehicle for clean air projects, which includes the purchase of heavy-duty alternative-fuel vehicles. The City recently received an additional grant of $90,000 to purchase three additional trucks within the next year. Assembly Bill 2766, signed into law in 1990, provides for the collection of an additional $4 in motor vehicle registration fees to fund various air pollution reduction efforts. Thirty cents of each dollar is deposited into the Discretionary Fund. The goal of the fund is to assist local governments to implement timely, effective air pollution reduction projects and directly support cities in meeting and promoting clean air within the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). More than 73 percent of the City’s solid waste fleet operates on LNG/CNG fuels. The City of Redlands has operated a Liquid Natural Gas/Compressed Natural Gas fueling station at its Corporate Yard at 1270 W. Park Ave. since 2003. The LNG/CNG fueling station is open to the public between 6 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
