In recognition of Prematurity Awareness Month, Maternal Child staff in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Labor and Deliver, and Postpartum at Redlands Community Hospital were recently honored by the March of Dimes. Ambassadors from the organization presented hospital staff with a plaque thanking them for their dedication to caring for babies, mothers and their families. “We are honored to receive recognition from an organization that does so much to help infants and their mothers,” said Carolyn Arnold, MSN, RN, director of women and infant services at Redlands Community Hospital. “The staff, physicians and volunteers at RCH are dedicated to helping all of our patients the best way possible and continually strive to improve our efforts.” The March of Dimes organization conducts research on full-term, healthy pregnancies and the genes that cause premature births, provides professionals with medical resources and educational materials to learn more about premature births and birth defects, funds the development of a vaccine that can prevent an infection by a virus known to cause more than 8,000 birth defects each year, and more. The Redlands Community Hospital's NICU is the area’s only level 2 NICU and provides special care for premature babies or babies with other medical problems. A team of neonatologists, pediatricians, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers and occupational therapists look over babies in the NICU until they are discharged home or transferred to the regular nursery.
