A A few hours before California Baptist University opened up its home season, the Lancers learned they were bumped to a top-20 ranking in the NCAA in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association poll. Unfortunately for CBU, it ran into eighth-ranked UC Irvine to begin its home season, dropping the game 16-7 Wednesday, Sept. 16. The Lancers fall to 2-3 on the year, with all three losses coming to top-eight ranked teams, and the Anteaters improved to 5-0. Brent Teraoka led CBU’s offense with a hat trick after scoring twice in the fourth quarter. Joseph Moorman picked up 12 saves to keep the Lancers in the game back in the cage. CBU saved its best quarter for last, outscoring UCI 4-3 over the eight minutes. Tucker Angelo chipped in two goals in the frame. It was Teraoka who got on the board first in the fourth, scoring two minutes and 10 seconds into the frame to bring his team within nine, 13-4. Angelo tallied consecutive six-on-five Lancer goals to bring the score to 15-6 with 2:34 remaining. Teraoka capped the scoring with 1:48 to play. In the first quarter, CBU fought to keep things close, as Tanner Shore found the back of the cage on a penalty shot 5:51 into the game to pull within 3-1. The Anteaters would tally two more goals before the quarter ended to go up 5-1 into the break. Teraoka earned his first goal on another penalty shot with 4:46 to play in the first half, which cut the deficit to 6-2. Christopher Forte scored the Lancers’ first even-strength goal with 4:14 left in the third quarter, which brought the deficit to 12-3. Moorman would log five of his game-high 12 saves in the third quarter, as well.
