IERCD Educates Community at Free Water Conservation Event

Project Manager Katie Heer, from the Inland Empire Resource Conservation District (IERCD), recently visited the A.K. Smiley Public Library to share different techniques and information with the community on ways to conserve water. One simple way to help cut down the use of water she noted is to “turn the water off when brushing your teeth,” something children can also easily practice. For those who want to conserve greater amounts of water, they can reduce the amount of landscape maintenance by looking into replacing their lawns with turf. Heer highlighted the promotion that IERCD is having with the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District and the Inland Empire Garden Friendly program. Heer offered water-friendly alternative plants that require little maintenance, which “people can easily find at their local Home Depot,” she said. Some members of the Redlands Horticulture and Improvement Society were among the attendees. Gerri Herth, a member of the club, said that she attended the free event to “gain more information which could be passed down to other members of the club.” Rita Hurley and Lani Howard, also members of the club, added that they do their part to conserve water by “having an automatic watering system and dividing their plants into zones by those which do not require any water to those that require most.” These free and informative events are held about once a month throughout the Inland Empire area by IERCD. They also have events designed teach not only adults, but children as well, about the importance of conserving water.
