A 51-year-old man suffered major injuries after he ran out of gas and was struck by another driver while standing behind his disabled vehicle. The accident was reported shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, on Alabama Street at Industrial Park Avenue. The victim was driving a Ford pickup south on Alabama when he ran out of gas. He was standing behind the truck retrieving a gas can when he was struck from behind by a 1991 Honda Accord driven by an 18-year-old Diamond Bar man. Redlands paramedics treated the victim on scene before he was transported by ambulance with major injuries to Loma Linda University Medical Center. The victim remains in serious condition. The driver of the other vehicle suffered only minor injuries. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but police say the driver of the Accord was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Southbound Alabama Street was closed from Orange Tree Lane to Industrial Park Avenue for about three hours. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Redlands Police Dispatch at 909-798-7681. Anonymous tips can be provided by texting 274637 using the keyword “REDTIP.”
