The Inland Master Chorale and University Choir combine with a 25-member orchestra to present “An Evening in Vienna” at the University of Redlands Memorial Chapel at 8 pm on March 10.
Under the direction of Dr. Joseph Modica, the concert features the music of Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750).
Over 100 voices from both choirs will join in performing Haydn’s, Missa in Tempore Belli (Mass in Time of War). This Mass in C Major is also known as Paukenmesse due to dramatic use of timpani. Soloists include soprano Bethany Encina, alto Grace Stewart, tenor Michael Klein, and bass George Becker.
The Chorale will perform Haydn’s Missa Brevis, a short mass written around 1775. Soprano Carlisle Momberger is the soloist for the Benedictus movement. The University Choir performs Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus, a motet composed for the feast of Corpus Christi in 1791. In addition, organist Hyunju Hwang will play two Bach compositions, Fantasie in G minor and Concerto in A minor.
Modica is in his first season as the Chorale’s Artistic Director. He is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Redlands and Director of Pastoral Music at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Hollywood. The 70-member Chorale includes singers from throughout the Inland Empire.
Concert tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door and $10 for students and children. University of Redlands students are free with valid ID. Children under five are not admitted. The concert begins at 8 pm.
The Chorale’s 2017-18 concert season concludes with Hymns, Songs & Spiritual Songs on May 19-20 at the First United Methodist Church in Redlands.
