The Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society will be holding its yearly hands-on demonstration on how to properly prune roses on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017 at Sylvan Park in Redlands. Those interested in attending can meet at 9 a.m. at the Elsie Grant Krimm Memorial Rose Garden which is located on the west side of University Ave., about one hundred yards south of Colton Ave. "Correct pruning cleans up the roses, stimulates new growth and will produce larger and more beautiful blooms," said former Redlands Historical Glass Museum Director Frank Herendeen. Herendeen said in a press release that the Boy Scouts from Troop 44, sponsored by the First Congregational Church in Redlands, will be planting 30 new rose bushes to replace some empty spots. Along with the new additions, he said there will also be repairing of the drip irrigation system. As an Eagle Project, Brett Crowley will be supervising the project. Herendeen said the organization needs volunteers and encourages the community to attend the event for a morning of pruning and education. He also encourages those who would like to attend to remember to bring long handled clippers and gloves, and be prepared to have fun pruning the rose garden. The press release states the Rose Pruning Demonstration will be postponed if it is raining, and will be rescheduled for a later date. For more information, contact George Nash (909) 226-8199.
