Medical Center Discusses Health Risks

SAN BERNARDINO>> During a recent press conference, Dignity Health's St. Bernardine Medical Center Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Victor Waters, encouraged the local community to be aware of the air quality and heat and to take preventive measures to minimize health risks such as staying indoors and avoiding strenuous exercise. The medical center has seen an increase of 10 to 15 percent in respiratory-related emergency room visits in June and July over the previous year. The extreme heat, local fires and resulting poor air quality are all factors that could impact health – especially for those who are sensitive to air pollutants or with preexisting conditions. “It’s important for our local community to be aware of the extreme environmental conditions and modify plans or activities that are harmless in good conditions but could pose a health risk in conditions such as these,” Waters said. “The bottom line is to be aware of the poor air quality in our area. If you have a respiratory condition such as asthma or COPD, prevention is the key. Follow the guidance of your primary care doctor. Take medications as prescribed if you have a preexisting condition and if you have difficulty controlling your symptoms, go to the emergency.”
